National Science & Technology Week

ISR-Lisboa researchers visited schools in the Lisbon area to talk to students for the "Engenharia e Ciência vão à Escola” Técnico initiative. Six researchers interacted with six classes of different ages, with themes ranging from AI, robotics, innovation and space technology.

The 1st edition of the Técnico initiative “Engenharia e Ciência vão à Escola”, included in the National Science and Technology Week held from 18 to 22 November, joined Técnico professors, students and researchers, with students from Lisbon, Loures and Oeiras. Throughout the week, more than 60 interactive sessions in almost 30 schools involved about 2500 students from 1st to 9th grade, bringing them closer to the technological and scientific innovations developed at Técnico.

ISR-Lisboa researchers joined the initiative and interacted with eight classes of different ages, with themes ranging from AI, robotics, innovation and space technology.

Professor Isabel Ribeiro has welcomed my classes at ISR, but going to a school is a different treat: “My passion for robotics was combined with the wonder and curiosity of children watching robots on Mars, playing football, making a sandwich, vacuuming the floor, robots with legs, wheels, or paws, and discovering what sensors are and how robots work. The result was an exciting morning with the 5th-grade students from Colégio Bartolomeu Dias in Santa Iria da Azoia, who went home with the challenge of discovering sonar sensors in cars parked on the streets.”

It was a wonderful experience, for all involved, and it will certainly not be the last time Técnico and ISR researchers visit schools to share how we are crafting the future of robotics and systems.

ISR-Lisboa helps relaunch small boats in the Atlantic Ocean

An important step was taken in the continuation of the American educational project “Educational Passages”, which involved a collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico the, Institute for Systems and Robotics in Lisbon and the Escola Azul programme, implemented by DGPM – Directorate General for Maritime Policy, with additional support from the company Transinsular. The project aims to launch small, unmanned boats equipped with GPS into the ocean, like 21st-century “messages in a bottle,” allowing their paths to be followed as they cross the sea.
