2025 Get Together Seminars

Research tends to bloom when there are opportunities to Get Together and exchange ideas. That’s why the Get Together Seminar Series by ISR-Lisboa ensures an opportunity to gather every month, not only within our community, but also with other LARSyS researchers, Técnico units and services, or industry partners.
We opened the 2025 round of Get Together Seminars with guest speaker Zita Marinho, a Senior Research Scientist at Google Deepmind, where she is currently working on the intersection of reinforcement learning and language models. She holds a dual PhD/MSc in Robotics from the Robotics Institute, and from IST University of Lisbon as part of the CMU/Portugal program, her dissertation focused on method of moments for language and planning. She holds a MSc. degree in Physics Engineering from Instituto Superior Tecnico, in 2010.
Her main research interests lie in algorithms bridging reinforcement learning and natural language processing. She is particularly interested in studying how agentic AIs can learn and explore more effectively from interactions. She is particularly interested in making these interactions more diverse and enriching the learning signal for learning agents.

After Zita in March, in April we will welcome Gordon Sarty, who has degrees in Mechanical Engineering (BScE, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada, 1982) and Applied Math (PhD, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada, 1995) and who has been working to design and build an MRI that is suitable for use in space. Gordon will be our guest speaker on the 17th, at the ISR-Lisboa meeting room.

ISR-Lisboa helps relaunch small boats in the Atlantic Ocean

An important step was taken in the continuation of the American educational project “Educational Passages”, which involved a collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico the, Institute for Systems and Robotics in Lisbon and the Escola Azul programme, implemented by DGPM – Directorate General for Maritime Policy, with additional support from the company Transinsular. The project aims to launch small, unmanned boats equipped with GPS into the ocean, like 21st-century “messages in a bottle,” allowing their paths to be followed as they cross the sea.
