1st Workshop on Embodied AI

The first ISR-Lisboa Workshop on "Embodied AI | Brains, Bodies, and Machines: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Embodied Intelligence" took place, highlighting the hot topic of harnessing AI, with a strong focus on how to tackle real-world challenges while exploring the powerful two-way exchange between neurosciences and robotics.
On September 25, the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa) hosted a full day workshop, intended on bringing together leading voices in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and robotics. The day opened with Pedro Lima’s welcome, setting the stage for a series of thought-provoking sessions.
  • Sethu Vijayakumar captivated the audience with “From Automation to Autonomy: Embodied Generative AI driving the Future of Work,” charting how robots are evolving from isolated decision-makers to collaborative partners across domains as diverse as surgery, extreme environments, and assisted living.

  • Emilia Ambrosini followed with an inspiring look at “Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation and Robotics,” presenting hybrid systems that merge NMES with robotics to enhance motor re-learning and rehabilitation outcomes.

  • Andrea Luppi closed the talks with “A Synergistic Network Architecture for Human Brain Evolution and Cognition,” offering a compelling exploration of how synergistic neural interactions underpin complex human thought and consciousness.

Engaging panel discussions after each session drew in our own experts, sparking debate on topics ranging from the balance between autonomy and control in robotics to mystery of consciousness in humans and machines.

With lively coffee breaks and an extended networking lunch, the workshop seemed to foster genuine exchange among students, researchers, and faculty. We hope participants left energized and inspired to pursue cross-disciplinary research avenues at the intersection of brain science and intelligent machines.
