ISR-Lisboa Shines at IROS 2024

At IROS 2024 in Abu Dhabi, ISR-Lisboa made a strong impression, with PhD student Rui Bettencourt presenting innovative research on robotic perception and President Pedro Lima delivering a keynote on the "European Approach to Robot Research Competitions." The conference, held from October 14–18, is a premier global event for robotics, focusing this year on "Robotics for Sustainable Development".

ISR-Lisboa was well represented at the 2024 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Abu Dhabi, held at Khalifa University, where robotics and AI experts worldwide gathered to share the latest innovations.

IROS 2024, one of the largest and most important robotics research conferences in the world, was held from October 14 to 18, attracting researchers, academics, and industry professionals globally. The theme of IROS 2024 was “Robotics for Sustainable Development,” emphasizing the role of robotics in achieving sustainability goals. The conference aimed to spotlight emerging researchers and practitioners, showcasing their contributions to sustainable development through plenary talks, workshops, technical sessions, competitions, and interactive forums.

Rui Bettencourt, PhD student at ISR-Lisboa, was happy to be present, seeing the event as “a great opportunity to see first-hand the current trends in robotics and meet fellow researchers while sharing our research at ISR”. Rui presented a paper focused on the exploration of the potential of combining traditional sensor data such as odometry, IMU and GNSS with additional information provided by matching 3d information with georeferenced 3d maps.

Adding to ISR-Lisboa’s strong presence at the event, President Pedro Lima delivered a keynote address titled “European Approach to Robot Research Competitions”. His speech highlighted the role of competitions in advancing robotics research and fostering innovation across Europe. Pedro Lima emphasized how these events drive collaboration between academia and industry, helping to accelerate the development of real-world robotics solutions.
